John Varlas is a lifelong Memphian who has covered high school sports in various capacities for over 20 years.
Two pick-sixes and a fumble recovery deep in North Texas territory boosted Memphis in the second half. The Tigers’ defense honored Danton Barto, the University of Memphis’ all-time leader in tackles, died in August of 2021.
