Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school boys basketball player of the week.

And we still need your help.

Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.

Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.

Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.

Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.

Here are the candidates for Week 1, which includes games played between Nov. 17 and Nov. 29.

Jamarion Chapman, CBHS: A transfer from rival MUS, Chapman is making life a whole lot easier for first-year coach Brad Luckett. The sophomore scored 16 points in a 51-38 win over PURE Academy on Nov. 28, then put up 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 65-49 victory over Humboldt the following day.

Carson Crump, St. George’s: Last year’s Daily Memphian freshman of the year opened with 25 points and seven assists in a 59-28 win over Wooddale on Nov. 19. Crump then scored 16 against a good Middle College team on Nov. 29 as the Gryphons improved to 3-1 with a 51-46 victory.

D.J. Okoth, Bartlett: One of the top players nationally in the Class of 2028, the 6-foot-8 Okoth has helped the Panthers to a 5-0 start against some strong competition. He went 7-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line in a 61-55 victory over Rod Wave Elite on Nov. 24. Okoth followed with 20 points and six boards as Bartlett rolled past CP Next Level Academy, 81-49, on Nov. 29.

Kevion Robertson, City University: A 6-5 junior, Robertson did a little bit of everything for City in a victory over Bluff City on Nov. 21. He scored 23 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead his team to a 77-63 win.

Fred Smith, Briarcrest: The arrival of transfer Josh Huggins likely means Smith won’t have to score as much this season. But the reigning Division 2-AA Mr. Basketball will continue to impact games in a major way, as he did against Lausanne on Nov. 29. The senior had a near triple-double, finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds and nine assists as the Saints (5-0) won 76-58.
