Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school boys basketball player of the week.
And we still need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.
Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.
Here are the candidates for this week, which includes games played over the Christmas break.
Justin Frison, Houston: Frison turned in several outstanding performances over the break for the Mustangs (10-4). The junior scored 30 points in a 71-50 victory over Arlington, had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists in a 70-60 victory over Chicago Simeon, scored 18 in a 67-58 win over nationally-ranked St. Frances (Md.) and tallied 29 points as Houston downed Starkville (Miss.), 70-42.
Dylan Jones, Bartlett: The nationally-ranked Panthers claimed another mighty impressive victory on Jan. 3, defeating Southeastern Prep (Fla.), 68-62. Jones, a highly-regarded junior, led the way with 25 points, an effort that included three 3-pointers and 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Zuri McClure, Lausanne: McClure did a little bit of everything as the Lynx beat White House-Heritage (Tenn.) on Dec. 29 — but mostly scored. He finished with 32 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead his team to an 81-78 victory.
A.J. Polk, Central: The Warriors head into the week with an area-best record of 16-1. Polk was outstanding in the 16th; he scored 18 points — including three 3-pointers and a 7-of-8 effort from the line — in a 61-57 victory over Link Academy (Mo.) on Dec. 30. Sixteen of Polk’s points came in the second half, including 11 in the third quarter.
Stephon Sheffa, Wooddale: A 6-foot-5 senior, Sheffa has emerged as a mainstay for coach Keelon Lawson’s Cardinals. He had a 39-point effort earlier in December and followed that up by scoring 27 points and pulling down 16 rebounds to lead Wooddale to a 56-50 victory over Jefferson (Texas) in the Terry Tippett Invitational.
