The voters have spoken. And they have chosen D.J. Okoth and Molly McGee as the OrthoSouth Fans’ Choice high school basketball players of the week.

Okoth is a 6-foot-8 sophomore at Bartlett who was recently honored as a Mr. Basketball finalist in Tennessee’s largest public-school classification. He played like one in the Panthers’ 66-41 victory over Houston on Feb. 13, tallying 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The victory capped an undefeated district season for the Panthers, who have the top seed for the district tournament. They’ll take the floor Saturday at 5 p.m. at Arlington against the winner of Friday’s Collierville-Germantown game.

Okoth — who garnered 47% of the total vote — is the second player from Tennessee’s top-ranked Class 4A team to win the fan vote this season. He joins sophomore guard Braylon Williams, the Week 5 winner.

Ehi Ataga of MUS finished in second place, followed by Lausanne’s Zuri McClure, Fred Smith Jr. of Briarcrest and Markel Townsel of East.

McGee earned 51% of the girls vote, beating out second-place finisher Amare’ Boothe of Bartlett. The voters liked McGee’s effort against region rival St. Benedict on Feb. 12; the sharp-shooting senior scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half to spark the Saints to a 58-32 victory.

Charity Relliford of White Station was third, followed by Houston’s Kallie Marsh and Ashlee Sinkfield of East.

Okoth, Sinkfield earn staff honors

Our staff agrees with the voters on Okoth and he will also be honored as our OrthoSouth Grizzlies player of the week. Our girls honor will go to Sinkfield, who turned in a 27-point effort on Feb. 9 to lead East to a 67-43 win over MASE.

A new round of voting begins on Monday.
