Once again this season, the Daily Memphian is recognizing a high school football player of the week.

And we need you — our readers — to help.

Each Monday, we post several of the top performers from the previous week’s games. Readers can vote for their favorite until Thursday at 5 p.m., at which point the winner will be announced.

Here are the candidates from Week 2.

KIPP lineman voted Player of the Week

Jaibriel Bowers, Whitehaven: Bowers led a strong night from the Tigers’ offense as he rushed for 144 yards on just 11 carries and scored a touchdown in his team’s 43-28 victory over Houston. It’s the first victory for Stan Collins in his return to the Whitehaven sideline.

Jakarion Burrell, Brighton: Brighton’s defense was outstanding last week, forcing five fumbles and recovering four. But individually, we’re going to go with Russell, who ran for 241 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns and caught two passes for 38 yards in his team’s 32-28 victory over Dyersburg. The Cardinals are 2-0 for the first time since 2021.

Jayden Flores, Kingsbury: The Falcons scored their most points in a game in 19 seasons thanks in large part to the efforts of their junior quarterback. Flores completed 13 of 23 passes for 211 yards and seven touchdowns (7, 5, 19, 55, 20, 20, 15) as Kingsbury defeated Booker T. Washington, 60-14.

Brett Godwin, Lakeland Prep: Hard to believe Godwin is finally a senior; he’s been slinging the ball around at Lakeland seemingly forever. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 276 yards and five touchdowns (9, 12, 20, 45, 2) as the Lions improved to 1-1 with a 53-26 victory over Bolivar Central.

Tyrese Johnson, Trezevant: This is hard to believe considering the program won two state titles (2015, 2016) and finished runner-up twice more in the span (2010, 2014). But not including forfeits, Trezevant is 2-0 for the first time since 2005 following a 20-14 victory over Manassas. Johnson led the way, rushing eight times for 69 yards and a touchdown while completing 5 of 9 passes for 104 yards and a second score.
