The Kitchen Table brings ‘elevated Southern cuisine’ to Arlington

One of Arlington’s favorite dining spots will begin its new life on Sunday, March 12, as The Kitchen Table opens in the former Vinegar Jim’s location.
Over the past couple of months, new owners Alicia and Brad Glover have renovated the building and fine-tuned the menu, preparing for the opening. They bought the property at 12062 Forrest St. off Arlington’s historic Depot Square late last year.
“We’re anticipating and are very excited to welcome the Town of Arlington to our kitchen table,” Brad Glover, who acts as the restaurant’s executive chef, said.
The iconic Vinegar Jim’s was built and opened in 1989, making it the oldest restaurant in the town. It served its final meal Dec. 14 after previous owners Jaclyn Miller and Brandon Nelson decided to sell the building and close the restaurant.
The Glovers had hoped their quick turnaround for the property would be done by last month.
“We had a few hiccups, but nothing too crazy,” said Brad Glover, who most recently worked as general manager and executive chef at Babalu’s in East Memphis. His experience in the restaurant industry dates to the late 1990s.

Additional improvements are planned in the coming months for the 1.3-acre property, including expanding the existing front deck around the side of the building and adding as many as 10 large tables on the lawn.
“Obviously weather has been an issue lately. They have to make sure the ground is completely dried before they put the footings in for the deck,” Glover said.
The structure was built from a variety of salvaged materials, including ceilings and floors made from reclaimed wood. The business also features a bar from the original Peabody Hotel.
Work over the past couple of months has included changing out some flooring, new paint and fixing some of the equipment. The new sign outside the restaurant was hung earlier this week.
The Glovers, who live in Collierville, were also approved earlier this week for their beer license from the Arlington Beer Board. They are in the process of getting their liquor license from the state.
“We’re building out the bar so when we do have a liquor license, we’re ready to roll,” Glover said. Local craft beers will include Crosstown, Grind City, Ghost River and Wiseacre.

Glover describes the menu as “elevated Southern cuisine,” with items like a braised beef rib, Mimi’s jalapeño cornbread with whipped honey butter, and shrimp and grits with a deep-fried cheesy grit cake.
Arlington Alderman Harry McKee is looking forward to having the new restaurant just down the street from his residence.
“I’m excited to have the Glovers here in Arlington because I think they’re going to do everything they can to make it a great restaurant for the citizens here and the surrounding areas. They’re committed to doing things the right way,” McKee said.
He believes the new restaurant will have a positive impact on the whole Depot Square area.
“The more things we have open, especially during the day around lunchtime, the more people we will attract at night,” McKee said.
The Kitchen Table will employ around 50 people to start out. Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 9 pm. Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
