Flash the Fox it is for Forest Hill Elementary School.

The new Germantown school, set to open in August, revealed its mascot Sunday afternoon during a schoolwide event for families inside Farmington Elementary, due to the threat of rain.

A costumed figure jumped out of a box as confetti cannons blasted. The fox and a dance team grooved to the song “What Does the Fox Say?” to unveil the choice.

The school, the sixth in the Germantown Municipal School District, was added to accommodate growth at the elementary level.

Students, who voted for the mascot during pep rallies held at various district schools, chose between a fox, firebird or flash.

Flash the Fox was the overwhelming winner, with 234 votes compared to 105 for Firebirds and 93 for Flash. Forest Hill principal Zac Percoski said using Flash as the mascot name was a way to incorporate one of the other options.

“It was a way to incorporate the idea for the kids who liked the idea of Flash,” Percoski said. “It's the best of both worlds.”

Percoski was smiling as families began to pour in Sunday afternoon.

“It's very exciting to see the sense of community (Forest Hill Elementary) is building,” he said. “We have a common goal to make the school the best it can be.”

Kari Armstrong has two children attending Forest Hill next year. She is the president of the school's parent teacher organization, and she greeted parents as they walked inside the building.

“This is absolutely amazing because I've already seen such a community developing at Forest Hill, and I continue to be amazed and surprised by the numbers of people wanting to get involved right away,” Armstrong said.

She complimented the district's commitment to families headed to the new school.

“GMSD has done a great job building momentum and excitement, and so I think people were initially sad to be leaving their schools because change is hard but they have done a wonderful job.”

She added: “I think everyone has followed their (school leaders') lead, and we are all so excited.”

When it opens in August, the school is expected to house 511 students in grades K-5.
