Lakeland approves first reading for ‘inevitable’ sewer-rate hike to flush the deficit

Sewer rates are set to go up dramatically in Lakeland throughout the next three-plus years, a hike necessary to avoid a deficit in the utility’s fund.

The Lakeland Board of Commissioners on Thursday, May 7, unanimously passed the first of two readings establishing new sewer-user rates and sewer-charge adjustments. OHM Advisors, which worked with the city on the study, determined a 30% increase is needed annually for up to four years.
