Food Files: Waffle House may come to Forest Hill Irene, Gangsta Fried Chicken opens Downtown

A Waffle House is being proposed for a 1.16-acre site at 3785 Forest Hill Irene Road.
A major modification request was filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Department of Planning and Development Thursday, Sept. 5, for a 1,913-square-foot Waffle House with 31 parking spots.
The application is pending.
The parcel was bought for $800,000 in August 2023 by Wow Resorts LLC, co-founded and co-owned by developer Anwar Aman, also the founder and CEO of White Oak Group, an investment group in Memphis.
Temporary Carolina Watershed tenant: Gangsta Fried Chicken
Customers can now get Gangsta Fried Chicken for a limited time at Carolina Watershed at 141 E. Carolina Ave.
Tandem Restaurant Group opened its new quick-service Memphis Original Gangsta Fried Chicken at Carolina Watershed Thursday, Sept. 5.
It will be offered there until its permanent location at 786 Echles St. is finished.
The group, which owns Carolina Watershed, put the Downtown bar and music venue up for sale in March for $1.3 million. With no buyers yet, the group decided to test its newest quick-service concept as a pop-up at the venue.
“We are still trying to sell it, but we have a location at Echles in the University of Memphis area that’s still under a ton of construction,” said Julien Salley, operations manager at Tandem Restaurant Group. “While Carolina Watershed has been closed, we said, ‘Hey, just open the concept as a pop-up inside, utilizing the kitchen and give Gangsta Fried Chicken its initial start and see how it does.”
Tony Westmoreland, co-owner of the restaurant group, said the Watershed is a cool place, especially in the fall.
“It’s an outdoor oasis,” Westmoreland said.
