Lakeland board prepares for potential school-voucher bill

The Lakeland school board provided a glimpse of its legislative agenda for the session in Nashville early next year focusing on preschool funding and taking a position on a possible return of school vouchers.

The meeting Monday, Sept. 9 also featured memories of Jeff Mayo, the former Arlington Community Schools superintendent who died recently after a battle with cancer. Lakeland had an educational relationship with its neighbor to the east as many middle and high school students attended Arlington schools before the opening of Lakeland Prep.

The legislative agenda, which the board still must finalize, focuses on the items local school systems want the Tennessee Legislature to consider when representatives meet early next year. One of the priorities will involve preschool funding for the Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement Act, or TISA, formula.
