The results of the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil investigation into the Memphis Police Department would not preclude potential criminal prosecution for the activities outlined in the report, Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy said.

“(With misconduct complaints), if we think there is merit to it, we have to think about whether we are going forward with that case,” Mulroy said during a taping of WKNO’s “Behind The Headlines” Thursday, Dec. 12. “If the evidence is serious enough and the alleged misconduct is serious enough, we have to think of whether we are going to prosecute.”

However, Mulroy also said many of the instances of alleged abuses found in the DOJ’s report were already reviewed by former Shelby County DA Amy Weirich, his predecessor.
