The Early Word: Central BBQ goes home, FedExForum witnesses wins
Good morning, Memphis. It’s Monday, Jan. 27 and today is the start of a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly convened by Gov. Bill Lee to pursue issues such as immigration, school vouchers and relief efforts from Hurricane Helene.
Meanwhile, Germantown officials are expected to appoint someone to fill an open seat on its school board.
In New York tonight, the Memphis Grizzlies will take their current NBA-best six-game winning streak into Madison Square Garden to face the Knicks.
Real ones know. Memphis’ now-ubiquitous Central BBQ isn’t so-named for the Central Time Zone or Memphis’ place at the crossroads of the country, but rather from the address of its original location. That location closed more than two years ago with an eye toward rebuilding bigger and better, and the new version of the original Central BBQ reopens today. Jennifer Chandler takes a sneak-peek.
All they do is win-win-win at FedExForum. The triplicate was earned over the weekend as the home teams had a 3-0 weekend. The Grizzlies beat the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, in decidedly offensive fashion, and the Utah Jazz on Saturday, where rookie Zach Edey threw his considerable weight around. The Tigers followed on Sunday, throttling visiting Alabama-Birmingham.
Plus the city’s spending on private legal bills is rising, while MATA waits for more cash. And parks director Nick Walker says goodbye.
