The Early Word: Messy math at U of M and another Grizz loss to shoulder

Rise and grind, Memphis. Better yet, grit and grind. It’s Thursday, March 6, and the Memphis Grizzlies will premiere a new documentary about Tony Allen — aka The Grindfather, aka Mr. First Team All Defense, aka the guy who coined “All Heart. Grit. Grind.”

The film, which will play on the Grizzlies YouTube channel, comes a week ahead of Allen’s jersey retirement. Watch it, and you might recognize a familiar face from The Daily Memphian. (Spoiler: It’s Chris Herrington.)

It sounds like the folks at the University of Memphis’ Auxiliary Services Foundation might want to pop into an auditing class on campus. The foundation, which deals with money from donors and high-profile projects, raised eyebrows with auditors for sloppy internal controls. The foundation didn’t distinguish restricted versus unrestricted funds and made payments before receiving funds. And this isn’t the first time auditors have found inconsistencies.

The Memphis Grizzlies dropped their fourth straight game on Wednesday to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The lopsided 120-103 score wasn’t for lack of trying by the team and star Ja Morant, who led with 24 points. Coach Taylor Jenkins said he was proud of his team’s progress against the Thunder, which has the best record in the NBA right now. Morant, however, said he shouldn’t have even played in last night’s game because he’s still having issues with his right shoulder. (That’s not what fans want to hear 20 games out from the playoffs.)
