Conaway: We are the target; we are the catch
Dan Conaway
Dan Conaway is a lifelong Memphian, fascinated and frustrated with his city, but still in love. A columnist since 2010, his distinguished advertising career has branded ribs in the Rendezvous and ducks in The Peabody, pandas in the zoo and Grizzlies in the NBA. Stories in Memphis tend to write themselves. He’s helped a few along. Two book collections of his columns have been published.
There is a school of thought that what’s happening in Washington, D.C., has nothing to do with us and dwelling on it serves no purpose.
With one of the largest public school systems in the nation and one of the most challenged, that can’t be our school of thought.
We, the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County, are supporting more than 200 schools and more than 100,000 students. According to U.S. News & World Report, the student body is 72.2% Black, 18.2% Hispanic/Latino, 5.3% white, with the balance a mixture of Asian, Native American and other races.
