Friendly rivalry fuels Tennessee’s best pole vaulters

A good pole vaulter requires tremendous upper-body strength, speed and power. A-plus coordination. Nerves of steel.

And another important trait, according to St. Agnes’ Claire Wetick.

“Just be a little bit crazy,” she said. “You’ve got to be a different type of fearless to just throw your body into the air and hope you land on the pit.”

Wetick definitely has the crazy gene that makes her a terrific high school pole vaulter. So does Collierville’s Ava Williams, Wetick’s friend, training partner and only current competitor for the title of Tennessee’s best.
