Germantown not paying schools what voters were promised

The Germantown Board of Education will soon notify the city of more than a $1 million shortfall in funding voters said the school district should receive from the suburb.

At issue is the calculation of how the city would help fund the municipal system. The city has continued to pay the same rate in recent years, while the school leaders believe the amount should have increased with the rising property values within the city limits.

When the formation of Germantown Municipal School District was approved via referendum nearly 13 years ago, the language stated the City of Germantown would put the equivalent of 15 cents for every $100 of taxable property toward the suburban system. Some municipalities use sales tax to fulfill the requirement, but the rate is set by the assessed value of property within the city.
