With its school system campuses finally complete and its first senior class receiving their diplomas this month, Lakeland School System’s budget for the next fiscal year will focus more on teachers and students and less on growth.
At a special-called meeting Tuesday, May 19, the district’s Board of Education unanimously approved a $37.8 million general fund budget for 2026-27 beginning July 1.
The board narrowly had a quorum to vote, with just three of the five members present. Board members Keith Acton and Jeremy Burnett joined the meeting by Zoom but were unable to vote.
Tuesday’s meeting came after the district received new financial information from the City of Lakeland before its regular monthly board meeting on May 11, which pushed back a vote on the annual budget.
