Dries: CBS Radio News signs off for the last time, leaving one less network to hit at the top of the hour

Bill Dries covers city and county government and politics. He is a native Memphian and has been a reporter for almost 50 years covering a wide variety of stories from the 1977 death of Elvis Presley and the 1978 police and fire strikes to numerous political campaigns, every county mayor and every Memphis Mayor starting with Wyeth Chandler.
CBS Radio News went silent Friday, May 22, after defining radio news across the U.S. for nearly a century.
The top-of-the-hour newscast, and all the network’s other broadcasting that’s aired on more than 1,000 radio stations across the country, vanished amid larger changes underway in the radio-news world.
The first sign of those changes began when people who know what a TV reporter does and what a newspaper reporter does started to get fuzzy about the job of a radio reporter.
