Suburban schools push back on arming teachers

Suburban school leaders are pushing back and responding to a bill that could allow Tennessee teachers to carry guns on campus.

The move has gained national attention and concerns teachers statewide. Teachers with Tennessee Education Association favor a safe school environment, but are firmly against the move to have armed teachers on campus.

“If we want a safe school where our children can succeed academically, we need to have educators focused on teaching and trained and certified officers focused on safety,” Tanya T. Coats, a 25-year Knox County educator and TEA president, said in a release after the bill passed.
