Suburbs look for silver linings after school-voucher legislation passes

Although suburban school boards in Shelby County say they are disappointed the school-voucher legislation passed, there may be a silver lining for them to support their teachers.

As part of an amendment passed with the bill, there is the opportunity for teachers during the 2024-25 school year to get a bonus of at least $2,000. For that to happen, the individual school boards must pass a resolution saying they’d like to participate and specify the funds will be used for bonuses. The resolution puts it on record that the money will not just sit in the general fund.

None of the outlying municipal districts wanted to see vouchers pass, although it looked like a losing battle when Gov. Bill Lee called the special session to consider the matter.
