Drew Hill covers the Memphis Grizzlies and is a top-10 APSE winner. He has worked throughout the South writing about college athletics before landing in Memphis.

Twenty-year-old Nick Dunlap may be the best chance for Memphis to get a storybook ending on Sunday at TPC Southwind. He’s currently five strokes off the leader Hideki Matsuyama in solo second.

Just a few months ago, Dunlap was a college sophomore at the University of Alabama. He still uses his school-issued golf bag and carries an Alabama yardage book.

But he came out of nowhere to seize his moment in January, winning the American Express title in LaQuinta, California, as an amateur. In doing so, he became the first amateur to win a Tour event since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

Seven months later, the “pinch me” feeling still has not worn off.

“I mean, I should be playing the (U.S. Amateur Championship) this week, and I just got done playing a round of golf with Scottie (Scheffler),” Dunlap said. “It was pretty cool.”

Actually, he had just finished playing a round better than world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
