Clay Bailey, a lifelong Memphian, has worked as a reporter in the city four decades. He concentrated on suburban coverage for the bulk of his career, except for a stint as sports editor of The Daily Memphian when it launched in September 2018. He now is suburban editor and also serves as a freelance sports writer for The Associated Press.

When Quail Ridge took its last tee time about a year ago, it seemed the end of the layout’s life of birdies and bogeys. The final divot was taken out of the fairway. The last peg sitting broken on a par-3 tee.

No one seemed interested in getting in the golf course business.

In a July neighborhood meeting, Jarod Wilder, whose family owned the course, said they tried to find a new owner/operator to no avail.
