Another MATA employee tests positive for the coronavirus
A Memphis Area Transit Authority MATAplus dispatcher is the ninth MATA employee to test positive for the coronavirus, officials announced Wednesday.
The employee’s last day of work was July 13 and MATA learned about the positive result on July 22.
The first employee to test positive was a maintenance worker on April 6. That employee’s last day of work was March 30.
MATA has had three bus drivers, a trolley driver, a trolley mechanic, a MATAplus driver and another MATAplus dispatcher test positive for the coronavirus.
MATA has more than 500 employees and has had no layoffs since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
During the early weeks of the coronavirus outbreak, MATA significantly curtailed bus routes and offered fare-free services.
On June 21, the transit authority implemented service changes that included reopened routes, new hours for transit centers and new fees.
Riders are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
