Retail center could jumpstart the ‘bootheel of Germantown’
Although the future of Forest Hill Heights often centers on a potential sports complex, Germantown is considering new retail centers for the Winchester Road corridor in the southeast corner of the suburb.
Tuesday night, Germantown’s Planning Commission discussed a shopping center for what Mayor Mike Palazzolo often calls the “bootheel of Germantown.” The area has one of the largest portions of vacant property in the landlocked suburb and among the greatest development opportunities.
A new project dubbed The Square at Forest Hill Heights will add retail options if it gains the necessary city approvals. The Planning Commission endorsed the plan Tuesday.

The sports complex is supposed to be a strong economic driver. But, while the city awaits a funding partner, development opportunities for the area are simmering.
