Bailey: Leadership Lakeland returns as a new step to encourage citizen participation

Clay Bailey, a lifelong Memphian, has worked as a reporter in the city four decades. He concentrated on suburban coverage for the bulk of his career, except for a stint as sports editor of The Daily Memphian when it launched in September 2018. He now is suburban editor and also serves as a freelance sports writer for The Associated Press.
Lakeland’s announcement this week that it will resurrect its Leadership Lakeland program after an absence of somewhere about two decades could provide more informed candidates in future elections.
Reporter Michael Waddell was clicking on the keyboard about the plan this week, outlining the reasons and the plans for the idea.
“I wish this had been here when I first became a commissioner,” Commissioner Connie McCarter said.
