The Tennessee House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that creates a state Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division and makes it a class E felony for local officials to vote in favor of sanctuary city policies.

The bill is sponsored by state Rep. Johnny Garrett, one of the central figures who led the expulsion proceedings against state Reps. Justin Pearson, Justin Jones and Gloria Johnson last April.
A local Spanish teacher is running as a Democrat for District 83 in the Tennessee House. The seat is currently held by Rep. Mark White, who is expected to be the main sponsor of the school voucher bill.

The House members of the committee examining federal education funds released their report Thursday, Jan. 25, and recommended greater legislative oversight of federal rules. But they are not, at least yet, proposing any cuts.

Kevin Vaughan, vice chairman of the Collierville School Board and a member of the state House, will resign from the school board at the end of the year. Vaughan said the decision is because he increased legislative responsibilities.
