The developer of Ashmont in Lakeland has indicated a grocery store might be interested in the mixed-use plan, but the identity of the business remains a mystery.
A mystery grocery store is looking at becoming part of the Ashmont development near Interstate 40 and Canada Road. Developers could not provide the identity but indicated it is a national chain.
A desire for tax increment financing help on Union Depot hit a snag because the developer can’t tell city officials what grocery store is planned for the mixed-use development.
And, soon, it will be in area Kroger stores, courtesy of Oh Grate!
The no-frills discount retail chain, based in Batavia, Illinois, is one of the fastest-growing grocery retailers in the U.S., with more than 2,000 stores in 36 states and more than 25,000 employees.
Hy-Vee, a Midwest grocery chain is expanding into the South and has an application for a new store in Bartlett.
“Their inventory levels were really low,” said Richard Gunn, who recently took over four Memphis stores. “I’m extremely passionate about keeping my stores looking like a grand opening every day — really well stocked and not just clean but sparkling clean.”
Listed for sale in June, Big River Market has set a final closing date of Aug. 9.
The announcement was made by Councilwoman Michalyn Easter-Thomas during a recent annual Vollintine Evergreen Community Association meeting Saturday, Jan. 29.
