Collierville’s Board of Education met in a special called meeting Sunday night. Staffing schools is a concern due to the number of employees who’ve positive for COVID or come in close contact with someone who has coronavirus.
The decision doesn’t declare a statewide mask mandate, nor does it force school districts to require universal masking. But it does prevent students from opting out of mask mandates if their schools have them.
The ruling mirrors those by federal judges in Memphis and Knoxville, where Lee’s order is also blocked. As a result, school districts in Shelby, Williamson and Knox counties can continue enforcing mask policies.
Compromise possible but lawyers say it’s more likely restraining order will be extended.
Protests from suburban parents continued Tuesday, although gatherings were smaller than those that occurred Monday.
A number of residents expressed their disdain of Germantown’s vaccine policy it issued and removed last week.
While other districts struggle with trying to appease parents over whether students should wear masks, Bartlett City Schools will continue to follow the direction of the county Health Department.
Students who do not comply and do not qualify for an exemption are to be sent home.
