Johntavius Griggs has been in custody at the Shelby County Jail for more than eight years on a first-degree murder charge in limbo with no clear path forward.

The settlement is significantly less than the $800 million the government had originally sought from the Memphis-based health care system.

Friday’s free event will also include a catered dinner buffet, presentations, vendors, informational displays and giveaways, and it will culminate with a balloon release to honor everyone in the Memphis community impacted by HIV/AIDS.

The race on Saturday, Dec. 2, will close roads across Downtown and Midtown, with some closures beginning Friday, Dec. 1.

The $1 million grant ensures Alliance will receive a matching $1 million gift from a private donor for its new mental health crisis center.

Dr. Martin Croce, Regional One Health’s senior vice president and chief medical officer, and Dr. Andrew James Kerwin, chief of trauma, trained at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, then left to pursue roles elsewhere. 

“Each of the last two years, we’ve had 1,400 patients come in from gun violence, and this year, we’re on pace to break that, which is really unthinkable,” said the chief of trauma at Regional One Health.
