Café Society adds steakhouse menu; Folk’s Folly offers limited Black Wagyu

The menu at Café Society has recently been revamped and starting unofficially today and officially on Thursday, a small steakhouse addition becomes part of it.
“We’ll have a steakhouse menu available, a filet, a strip, ribeye, a la carte sides, all that,” said part-owner Tony Westmoreland.
Café Society was opened by Michel Leny close to 30 years ago, sold to Cullen Kent more than 10 years ago, and earlier this year transferred to Tandem Restaurant Partners, which is owned by Kent and Westmoreland and his wife, Stephanie. The group also owns and will soon reopen Zinnie’s, Mardi Gras, and is consulting now with Strano. For a brief time it had half of Interim, which Westmoreland owned pre-Tandem with Ed & Britney Cabigao, the couple who now owns the East Memphis restaurant entirely.

“I am out of Interim. I’m trying to grow a structure for restaurant professionals in Memphis and that’s what I need to focus on,” Westmoreland said. “And they (the Cabigaos) wanted to spend more time at Interim to help it grow.”
Tandem was formed in February and the concept is to help struggling restaurateurs keep their businesses going by partnering with Tandem, which will help staff and run the restaurants in exchange for part ownership. Plans also include helping chefs open new restaurants, Westmoreland said. At present, Café Society, Mardi Gras, Zinnie’s, and La Maison Blanche (opening this fall in Germantown) are part of the group. Westmoreland owns Growlers independently of Tandem, and they’re in a 90-day trial period with Strano. Tandem is also part of the Germantown Beer Garden, a popup in Saddle Creek that will operate on weekends through September in the former Grimaldi’s Pizza.
Zinnie’s, the Midtown classic that closed after more than 40 years last fall, should be open in about a month, Westmoreland said.
And more beef
Speaking of steakhouses: If you’re ready to splurge, Folk’s Folly is your place for the next little while. It’s available now — you’re the first to know — but will officially go on the special menu that comes out Wednesday. I’m talking topnotch Japanese beef.
It’s A5-grade Miyazaki Black Wagyu and Folk’s has 15 ribeyes available. Only 22 animals were available for import this year, so it’s not just a premium cut but a rare one and a pricey one, too. It’s $115, so look back at my first sentence. I told you this was a splurge, but it’s also an opportunity that won’t come around often.

It’s also available as an appetizer ($25) served with truffle shoyu, scallions and wontons. Call for reservations and let them know if you want the ribeye; 901-762-8200.
Destination: Delicious
Kelly English is back in the kitchen at Restaurant Iris and has returned the menu to a Louisiana-inspired one similar to the original menu — though not the same one. We’ll go over the menu as it gets closer to dinner time, but I can promise you’ll be pleased with the choices and you’ll have a good time.
Reserve early, because we’ll sell out fast. Tickets are $38.93 for subscribers and $45.93 for non-subscribers. The cost includes tax and tip but no alcohol. Subscribers will receive an email with the code for the discount; enter it where it asks for the promo code. Click here to get your seats.
I’m beach-bound, so no column next week. I’ll see you back here July 29 and at Restaurant Iris, 2146 Monroe, at 6:30 p.m. July 30.
