Biggs: September kicks off a fall full of food events

It’s time to get the calendars out. Once Labor Day passes, the events start coming fast. Here are some coming soon.
Sip & Shop at Regalia is 5-7 p.m. Sept. 12 at Regalia Shopping Center at Poplar and Ridgeway. Tickets are $20 online through Sept. 11 and $25 on site. Beer and wine will be served by Great Wines & Spirits; there will be food from Salsa Cocina Mexicana, Sweet LaLa’s Bakery, Ronnie Grisanti’s Italian Restaurant and Owen Brennan’s, and live music by Michelle and Jeremy Shrader’s Quintessentials on the patio. There also will be shopping specials at many of the stores. Purchase your tickets online and be entered in a drawing for two $100 gift certificates for use at Regalia shops and restaurants.
For more information or to purchase tickets, click here. All proceeds will benefit Memphis Opportunity Scholarship Trust (MOST), a need-based scholarship program for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
On Sept. 15, ASBEE World Kosher BBQ Competition and Festival is back for its 31st year. It’s at Anshei Sphard-Beth El Emeth synagogue at 120 N. East Yates Road and features a day full of events including a kosher barbecue. It starts at 9:30 a.m. with a basketball tournament and goes through the day with music, a petting zoo, a kids’ pickle-eating contest and the barbecue competition. With about 40 competitors and 3,000 visitors, the event is large enough to have a fun feel but small enough that it doesn’t overwhelm. (It’s one of my favorite festivals of the year, by the way. I’ll be there judging.)

Grace House of Memphis hosts its first Great Memphis Food Fight Sept. 19 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Memphis Botanic Garden, with a silent auction beginning at 11 a.m. Chefs Erling Jensen, David Krog, Michael Patrick and chocolatier Phillip Ashley Rix will put on a show and feed guests a nice lunch, with proceeds going to Grace House's center for women fighting addiction. Grace House was founded in 1976 and since then, about 5,600 women have received treatment and housing there. Tickets are $25 at 901tix.com and $30 at the door.
And Sept. 21, it’s back to Regalia for Cookies and Cocktails, a pairing of two of our favorites and heavy hors d’oeuvres, at Sweet Lala’s Bakery. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by clicking here.

And don’t forget: The Peabody’s 150th Anniversary Dinner is Sept. 5. Former chefs Jose Gutierrez, Reinaldo Alfonso, Jason Dallas and Ana Gonzalez will all be back to cook, along with The Peabody’s executive chef Andreas Kisler and pastry chef Konrad Spitzbart.

Restaurant news
Highland Axe & Rec opens Sept. 4 at 525 S. Highland with a a fun menu that was designed by chef Russell Casey of Bounty. The space, which occupied Maciel’s until last month (Maciel’s Downtown is still open) has been renovated to accommodate axe-throwing lanes in what was formerly the patio; the dining area is now more of a rec room space with big screens, games and soft seating.
There’s a full bar and the menu includes items such as wings, burgers, nachos and so on. Axe will operate daily, opening around 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and around 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. It will stay open late, but the hours aren’t finalized yet.
El Mero Taco, 8100 Macon Station, has received its liquor license, so let the bar cart service commence. Look for a changing menu of drinks prepared tableside at this family-run taqueria.
STIX Restaurant has announced plans to open by the end of the year at 150 Peabody Place. There’s a STIX in Collierville and this will be a pared-down version of that one, offering counter service with sushi, snacks such as crab wontons, hibachi meals made in the kitchen and wok entrees. The new restaurant will be accessible to ServiceMaster employees from their offices and to non-employees from a street entrance.
