Seeking to improve morale and test scores, Frayser Community Schools announced several staff changes at Martin Luther King College Prep High School – including a new principal.

MLK Prep assistant principal Delnita Mickey is the school’s new principal. Mickey replaces former principal Marcus Shead, who left the school by a “mutual decision,” said Frayser Community Schools Executive Director Bobby White.

“This move and this decision was grounded in us saying, ‘Right now we’re stagnant, we want to make sure we jump start this thing and move forward at a quicker pace and get to where we said we wanted to be,’” White said.

Shead was in his third year as principal, and Mickey is in her second year at MLK Prep. The changes took effect Monday.

Other key staff changes include adding another assistant principal to assist Mickey. One would work with the reformed ninth and 10th grade academy, while the other assistant principal will support the 11th and 12th grade academy.

The staff restructuring resembles the school’s original structure, when the school received a level 4 TVAAS score for the 2015-16 school year.

MLK Prep, founded in 2013, remains a priority school operated by the state’s Achievement School District.

The school has received a level 1 under the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, or TVAAS on its state report card for the past three years. TVAAS measures a school’s academic achievement growth on a scale of one to five each school year, with 1 being the lowest measure.

Mickey said she’s most excited about inspiring students who are so close to becoming young adults. Before coming to MLK Prep, she taught at Westside Middle School and Trezevant High School.

“I hope to assist Dr. White in making sure his vision comes alive of why we’re MLK (High School),” Mickey said. “Being able to make sure our students are academically successful, are socially conscious and are just prepared for the real world.”
