The Shelby County Board of Commissioners’ new majority elected with the Thursday, Aug. 6, Election Day will retain the 9-vote Democratic majority it currently has.

Incumbent Alderman Jeremy Biggs won his third term in Position 6 on the Arlington Board of Mayor and Aldermen in town’s only contested race Thursday, Aug. 6.

Democrat Mickell Lowery will be the next mayor of Shelby County.

No Republicans ran for the Memphis school board seats on the ballot. Democratic nominees bested independent challengers in races for two open seats, while two incumbents on the board secured their victories in May’s primary races.

Democratic candidate Anthony Bucker claims victory in the race for Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The early and absentee vote totals for the 14 days of the early voting period were the first released Thursday, Aug. 6, by the Shelby County Election Commission.

Also, two Memphians — Heidi Kuhn and Marquita Bradshaw — quickly secured Democratic nominations Thursday, Aug. 6.

Just two incumbents won reelection in the six judicial races on Thursday’s ballot.

State Sen. Brent Taylor continued his political ascendance Thursday night, winning the 9th Congressional District Republican nomination.

State Rep. Justin J. Pearson capitalized on his nationwide fame and appeared ready to cruise to an easy victory in the Democratic primary. 

The Millington races for seats on the suburb’s Board of Education went as expected, as all of the candidates were unopposed, setting the stage for November’s general election.

The November general election matchup between Marsha Blackburn and Jerri Green will end with voters electing the first woman to be governor of the state.
