Wine works, but other spirits are sweet with dessert too

Give someone a piece of cheese, and chances are good they’ll find a wine that pairs with it, even if they just stumble on it — it’s pretty easy to do.

But pairing dessert with wine is anything but a piece of cake. It’s harder to find a wine that stands up to sweet food and still have the food and the wine show at their best.

This 29-minute podcast was hosted by food editor Jennifer Biggs with guests Kat Gordon of Muddy’s Bake Shop and Sisco Larson of Joe’s Wines & Spirits. It was recorded on Monday, Feb. 8, and airs on WYXR on Thursday morning, Feb. 11, at 11.

So we turned to Sisco Larson of Joe’s Wines & Spirits and Kat Gordon of Muddy’s Bake Shop. They each know more than a little about spirits and sweets and are both part of a Valentine’s Day box dinner that matches them with Kelly English’s restaurants and Rachel’s Flowers.

You can hear more about the box in Sound Bites, and hear about other good pairings, too. Sparkling wine is the default; it’s an easy way to end a meal. But Larson takes us through some good red wine possibilities, fortified wines, and we end up in spirits — Manhattan for dessert, anyone? — before he really catches my attention with beer and dessert match-ups.
