High school sports results for March 14: Bean delivers in the clutch for Gryphons

One day after a gem from Wil Wood, St. George's had to dig deep for a victory Thursday.

Andy Bean drove in four runs as the Gryphons spotted Germantown (Mississippi) an early three-run lead before rallying to win, 5-4, at the Battle of the Beach Tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi. The come-from-behind victory came after Wood threw a no-hitter in Wednesday's win over Harrison Central (Mississippi).

The Gryphons are now 2-2.

Bean went 2 for 3 with a double and was the only St. George's player with more than one hit. He had a two-run single in the top of the fourth the tied the game at 3 then, after Germantown had regained the lead, drove in Wilson Whittemore and Reagan Burford in the top of the sixth to win it.

Burford scored twice and also picked up the save in relief of winner Dalton Firtik, who struck out five, walked one and gave up two earned runs in five innings.

Sam Poindexter allowed two hits and struck out eight in five innings as Collierville improved to 4-0 with a 12-2 victory over ECS. Poindexter, a junior lefthander, threw 53 of is 80 pitches for strikes and got threw first-strike pitches to 17 of the 23 batters he faced. Noah Hattier, Ty Leatherwood and Kobe Perkins each drove in two runs. MUS wrapped up its trip to the Battle of the Beach Tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi with an 8-1 loss to Prestonwood (Texas) Christian. Losing pitcher Ben Burkhart drove in the Owls' only run. … Chris Braswell picked up the win as Bartlett edged CBHS, 4-3.

Garrison McBride went 3 for 3 and Logan Rushing drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth as Brighton stayed undefeated, 6-4 over Arlington. In softball, St. Benedict wrapped up a 4-0 trip to Orlando with a 10-3 victory over Second Baptist Academy (Texas). Josie Gex won her fourth game in the circle and went 2 for 3. Preseason all-American outfielder E.C. Taylor went 3 for 4 to pace the offense and Neely Taylor also had two hits.
