Memphis beat Troy 38-17 last year, but Trojans quarterback Goose Crowder missed most of that game with an injury. The Tigers must deal with a healthy Crowder now.

Brendon Lewis is averaging 74.5 rushing yards in the season’s first two games. That puts him on track to become the Tigers’ leading quarterback rusher for a single season. 

Gianni Spetic’s 55-yard bomb in Memphis’ 38-16 road victory over Georgia State gave the Tigers their first lead of the game going into halftime.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned since I’ve gotten out (of coaching) is that right now, there’s about 10 or 12 (teams) that have a chance to win,” the 2005 national championship winner told the Memphis Touchdown Club. “And those are the ones that are putting big money into it. Everybody else? They’re trying to survive.”

Five different receivers have three catches or more after the first two games. That receivers’ room is producing by committee, and Ryan Silverfield says the variety is a positive.

Three Memphis players from the Atlanta area — Sutton Smith, Makari Bodiford and DeMarco Ward — put on a show in the Tigers’ 38-16 win at Center Parc Stadium.

“I do have to do a better job, kind of protecting myself and not taking hits that are unnecessary,” Memphis Tigers QB Brendon Lewis said. “But I like taking those hits. ... It kind of calms me down and gets me in the flow of the game.”

Memphis (1-0) cruised to a 45-10 win over FCS Chattanooga last week, while Georgia State fell 63-7 to an Ole Miss team that is currently ranked No. 20 in the Associated Press Top 25.

The Arkansas Razorbacks football team will play Memphis at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 20, but the return game scheduled for 2026 has been rescheduled.
