Vote for the high school girls basketball player of the week, Week 3
Once again this season, The Daily Memphian will be spotlighting a high school girls basketball player of the week.
And we still need your help.
Each Monday, we’ll list candidates from the previous weeks games and fans can vote on their pick for the week’s top player. Thanks to our partnership with OrthoSouth, player of the week stories will now be free to access, with no payment or subscription required to vote for the Fans’ Choice Player of the Week.
Voting ends at 5 p.m. each Thursday.
Our staff will also choose a player of the week — the OrthoSouth Grizzlies Player of the Week.
Some weeks we may agree; some we may not. But we still want the fans to make their voices heard.
Here are the candidates for Week 3, which includes games played through Dec. 13.
Paityn Meacham, Brighton: With only six players healthy, the Cardinals were up against it in their game against Trezevant on Dec. 12. But thanks to Meacham, they were right there at the end; the sophomore scored 23 points and — despite a listed height of 5-foot-3 — grabbed 19 rebounds in a 44-40 loss.
Zaria Moss, Arlington: The city’s leading scorer bolstered her totals with a pair of big performances last week. Moss poured in 28 as the Tigers downed Ridgeway, 73-20, on Dec. 9, then put up 24 more in a hard-fought 38-36 loss to White Station on Dec. 12.
Orlyncia Newson, Soulsville: Newson is the second-leading scorer in Memphis — but may not be there for long with more efforts like the one against Power Center Academy on Dec. 11. She scored 19 of her season-high 35 points as Soulsville pulled away for a 66-37 win.
Ashlee Sinkfield, East: After winning their region in Class 4A last season, the Mustangs should be extremely formidable after dropping down to 2A — thanks to the return of players like Sinkfield. She finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to propel East to a 59-36 win over Lausanne.
Faye Williams, Bartlett: Bartlett’s game against Tipton (Mo.) in a showcase event in Springfield on Dec. 12 didn’t start until after 10 p.m. But Williams was wide awake; the SEMO signee scored 18 points as the Panthers won, 67-54.
