In Collierville, the rule is you have to resign to run

Two Collierville aldermen plan to run for mayor, but they have to step down from their current elected positions.
Collierville’s resign-to-run rule took effect in 2018, but the election in 2024 is the first time candidates and residents will see the impact as Mayor Stan Joyner plans to retire from elected office.
Any board member, who is not up for reelection, but wants to seek a different position must resign from their alderman seat. The resignation is irrevocable but not effective until after the election when the newly elected mayor takes the oath of office.
The charter change was intended to create “fairness to all board members,” said James Lewellen, former town administrator.
