Table Talk: Weird food combos, Frost’s third and the potatoes return
Welcome back to Table Talk, where Daily Memphian food and dining editor Jennifer Biggs sends the latest food news (along with a dash of this and that) to your inbox every Wednesday.
The Sunshine Burrito at City Silo helped prompt an unexpected discovery. (Jennifer Biggs/The Daily Memphian)
Saturday was a great day to catch up with friends who were in town for the Beale Street Music Festival.
I started at City Silo for breakfast, where I ate only half of my breakfast burrito because I also had a late lunch planned. James, my breakfast date, was only in town for Friday’s performances and took the rest of it back to Oxford with him.
I went about my day, met one of my oldest friends for lunch at High Point Pizza because every time he’s here, he wants a muffuletta, and we go to different places. It was a wonderful long afternoon in the breezeway — there’s really nothing like being with people who you knew when you were young and carefree — with a great sandwich, a couple of beers and a lot of reminiscing.
A bit later, I received a text from James, who ate the burrito and from that, felt like he soared to a new level of culinary heights. He doused it with a bit of Louisiana hot sauce, and it got on his dessert. He texted me and said he’d discovered his favorite new food combo: Cherry pie and hot sauce.
A day later: “I just had peach pie with hot sauce. Delicious! I have made a brilliant discovery.”
Later: “Blueberry pie, too. Any pie benefits from hot sauce.”
It all gets a big no from me, but I haven’t tried it so who am I to judge? (Let me note that there are plenty of things I haven’t tried that I feel comfortable saying no about.) But it reminded me of an article I wrote some years ago about strange food combinations: Milk gravy with chocolate cake. White beans on coconut cake. Peanut butter with everything from bologna to onion to coleslaw. Those stand out in my memory, but there were plenty more.
My grandmother always put salt on her watermelon; she said it made it sweeter. My daughter still eats jelly with her bacon and eggs, and my granddaughter dips her popcorn in ketchup, but she’s a child who would eat ketchup with a spoon. (And popcorn with ketchup? Not as bad as you might think.)
Almost every week I eat a piece of a friend’s mango roll at Sakura, a big sushi roll draped with fresh slices of sweet fruit. But I tried a roll with a banana in it at another place and well, that was just awful.
Yet I’m a sucker for a pimento cheese ring with jelly in the middle (hot pepper jelly is the best, but strawberry will do).
And I love an Atlantic Beach Pie, which has a saltine cracker crust. Will I put hot sauce on it? No thanks, but will I judge James if he does? Yes! Hot sauce on whipped cream is just crossing the line. Too far. (The links will take you to some Southern Living recipes.)

I should’ve asked Kristi Kloos, co-owner of Frost Bake Shop, what she’d think about someone dousing one of her pies with hot sauce when I visited the newest Frost, which opened Monday in The Lake District. It’s a great shop and I wish them all the best.
New cocktail bar Inkwell opens this Friday. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian)
Elle Perry gave us a look at Inkwell, a sweet spot for grownups that will open in the Edge District on Friday. The cocktail bar will have some nibbles along with signature drinks and classics, and the tile floor, homage to the tile company that once occupied the space, is beautiful.
And poor Danny Sumrall. Just a day after he said the Half Shell was safe from the demolition ball coming to Williamsburg Village, a corner of the building went inadvertently drive-through. Then it turned out that it was Daily Memphian columnist Dan Conaway driving the car. Luckily, no one was hurt, and I hear Dan is going to write about what happened in his column.
The mashed potatoes are back, coming to the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest next weekend. Remember when Idahoan sent us all a pack of instant potatoes last year? Well, now they’re bringing the “world’s first immersive mashed potato” experience to Memphis.
Everyone have a great week. If you’re at the Memphis Farmers Market on Saturday, you can nibble on some crawfish while you shop, as there’s a boil going on from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Central Station Pavilion at G.E. Patterson and S. Front.
Meanwhile, indulge me and have a little fun. What’s your popcorn and ketchup, your hot sauce on pie? Share your unusual food combinations in the comments on this story. And be proud of it!
