One of last two surviving 1968 sanitation workers dies

Former Memphis sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry lived long enough to see his name on a marble memorial erected in honor of the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike, which began after two workers — Echol Cole and Robert Walker — were crushed to death in the compactor of a garbage truck.
