A new-to-Memphis airline is launching non-stop flights to two destinations, including one the Memphis International Airport considers its “top unserved destination.”

Memphis is the No. 2 city in the nation for cargo theft behind Los Angeles-Long Beach, and it’s a problem that “has a ripple effect” for retailers and consumers. 

Lance Moll will serve in his role until Jan. 31 and move into an executive advisor position until July 31. 

The three-story building will feature a rooftop observation deck that will overlook the airfield and be used for community outreach. 

FedEx released a service alert Thursday saying delays and disruptions for inbound and outbound shipments are possible “due to local conditions and restrictions.” 

American Airlines flights were cleared to fly by federal regulators about one hour after a national ground stop order was issued.

Analysts say FedEx Freight, worth $30 billion, should be traded against its peers, not locked up inside. 

The company affirms the value of its savings programs, more than $6 billion through 2027, but downgrades earnings-per-share for the rest of the year.

The project will start in April and is expected to take two years. Ultimately a five-lane road will be the airport’s entrance.

The cuts this week are likely the result of the company’s massive work to merge its Express, Ground and FedEx Services divisions.

Major importers in Memphis rely on the Canadian National Railway’s service from Prince Rupert because that route shaves 500 miles off the sail time from key Asian harbors.

The United States is Canada’s largest trade partner. Ships loaded with containers for now are waiting offshore. 

The new sorting technology is expected to end nights at the hub when the bottom falls out due to weather, outages or package spikes. 

The facility is large enough to sort 56,000 packages an hour.

Shaun Kavanaugh, 46, of Orlando, Florida, pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to mail fraud. He received more than $750,000 from FedEx.
