Prime rib isn’t necessarily having a renaissance moment in Memphis — and Belle Tavern isn’t trying to lead one. Instead, the Downtown restaurant quietly serves a Thursday-night special that feels intentionally old-school, in the best way possible.
Stepping into Belle Tavern from Barboro Alley feels like being let in on a secret for only Memphians “in the know.” The tiny tavern is tucked into a space surrounded by parking garages, apartments and commercial buildings.
The atmosphere inside leans toward warm familiarity rather than flash. A large, wooden bar dominates the center of the room. Low-lit, high-top tables and counter seating line two walls and a banquette of booths fills back. The clink of cutlery and the occasional pop from the open kitchen are the soundtrack to a meal meant to be savored slowly.
