Cynthia Daniels had already had a classic eggs-and-bacon breakfast and egg rolls for lunch by the time she sat down with me for this week’s “Sound Bites” podcast recording.
“I have dinner reservations, too,” she said.
It’s Memphis Black Restaurant Week through March 22, and as the event’s founder, Daniels does her best to taste, try or at least stop by each of the 20 participating restaurants.
Eleven of those have opened in the last year, including Poppz Drinks in Collierville (a Utah-style soda shop) and Memphis Jamaican Kitchen in the Medical District.

For diners, it’s a chance to find a new favorite restaurant or save money on dining out. For the businesses, it can be a lifeline.
On the podcast, Daniels reflected on a decade of MBRW, its impact on the city and why she keeps organizing the event.
We also got into the specifics of dishes we love from MBRW spots, including the aforementioned bacon-and-eggs breakfast at Biscuits and Jams’ newish Downtown location and the egg rolls at the “carefully decorated” (Daniels’ words) three levels of dining at Mahogany River Terrace at Mud Island River Park.
Daniels shouts out the vegetarian lasagna at Son of a Vegan (in the Hickory Ridge Mall) and its “unbelievably moist” vegan chocolate cake as well as catfish from SugaShack (on the eastern end of Beale Street).

With more than 40 trucks, you will want to hear her suggestions for how to try as many good eats as you can. She even surprised me with a recommendation for fried broccoli from one particular food truck.
