Sound Bites: How Jennifer Chandler hunts recipes and decides ‘what to order’
Jennifer Chandler is a Memphis-based chef, cookbook author, food writer and former restauranteur. She was the guest on Season 9 Episode 36 of Sound Bites. (Screenshot)
Hunting down recipes from Memphis restaurants, choosing delicious dishes to recommend and writing about food are all part of what Jennifer Chandler calls “the best job in the world.”
She joined me on “Sound Bites” to talk about her recent stories in The Daily Memphian, a special chocolate cake, a must-try pork tenderloin sandwich (for less than $15) and much more.
Things have changed since Chandler was last on the “Sound Bites” Memphis food podcast. Now, there’s a whole video podcast studio, bright lights and cameras in our faces!
We laughed about this. I attempted to use a prop. It was a grand time.

Want to know what to order? Jennifer Chandler writes a weekly column in The Daily Memphian sharing good dishes and food finds around town, like these soup dumplings from MingXia.(Jennifer Chandler/Special to The Daily Memphian)
It’s hard to pick my favorite moment from the interview. It’s either when Chandler reveals the one recipe she wishes she could find, from a French restaurant that closed in 2002 — or when I throw in a final question about negative restaurant reviews.
She also gave lots of tips on how to get your preferred table in a restaurant and talked about how she finally found a place that serves soup dumplings to rival those she tried on a visit to Shanghai.
