Sound Bites: Smashburgers, ‘filet o’ Phish,’ gummy bears get Gussied Up for bar’s opening

Like most projects Cole Jeanes and Harrison Downing have worked on with their business partner Schuyler O’Brien, Gussied Up is a big group effort.
Jeanes and Downing joined me on “Sound Bites” recently to talk about the Edge District bar that will share a space, in a way, with their sandwich shop Hard Times Deli.
Gussied Up’s official opening day is Saturday, Oct. 24.
Much of the menu is sourced locally, with meat from Home Place Pastures, bread from Hive Bagel and Jacques Louise, tequila from Memphis-based Alma del Jaguar, and vegetables from local farmers.
The bar’s Funyun dip is a wink to the smoked onion dip with caviar they provide to their neighbors at Bar Limina.
The Tiffany-style stained glass lamps were handmade by local artist Hannah Reasons. They give me major warm, fuzzy Pizza Hut vibes.
For a different kind of fuzzy memory, they’ll also sometimes offer a beer-shot-candy-cigarette combo in three different sizes.

Since it was Downing’s third time on the podcast (get his background on episodes from January 2025 and September 2025) and Jeanes’ second time (same September episode, found here) I wanted to get to know them a little more.
What’s for breakfast? What are their average days like as working dads? How will the existing Hard Times Deli space work with the new Gussied Up bar?

As they said in a recent story from Sophia Surrett, the trio originally caught buzz from their smashburger pop-ups and the “patty daddies” brand. All three chefs are also husbands and fathers.
Of course, we talked about the food menu for Gussied Up in Downtown Memphis. More on that and the drinks here.
Listen or watch the whole episode below.
Gussied Up is at 655 Marshall Avenue in Downtown Memphis. The hours are Wednesday to Thursday 5-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5-11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
