Ellen Chamberlain is a global citizen who is happy to call Memphis her forever home. The Michigan native has worked in media for nearly 25 years as a radio broadcaster, journalist and ghostwriter. As The Daily Memphian’s food and restaurant writer, she gives readers inside perspectives of their favorite restaurants and the people behind them, suggestions for the best bites around town and the latest food news from in and around Shelby County.

Fluffy biscuits and “righteously” fried fowl dominate the menu at Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken, a North Carolina-founded franchise that has two Memphis-area locations.

The most important thing to know before your first Rise experience is that the restaurants are cashless. Orders are placed online or by a kiosk at the front counter, and a text message is sent to your phone to let you know when it is ready.

All orders are prepared to go, but customers are welcome (and encouraged) to dine either inside the restaurant or on the patio.

But the most important thing to know when you arrive at Rise is what to order: the Sweet Country Blues biscuit sandwich.

Whole blueberries are folded into the biscuit batter before it’s baked to a large, fluffy interior texture and a generous portion of glaze covers its golden-brown top. The biscuits are halved and receive an almost perfectly sized, savory sausage patty that is aptly described as “country-seasoned.”

Together, it’s a satisfying combination that could only be made better with the addition of an egg. It’s perfect whether you’re placing your order as soon as the restaurant opens in the morning or you’re barely making it in before closing time in the afternoon.

Aside from the Sweet Country Blues, Rise offers an assortment of breakfast sandwiches and platters, fried chicken sandwiches, biscuits and sides. Most sandwiches on the menu have vegan or vegetarian alternatives and all can be customized.

The popular breakfast and lunch restaurant has two Memphis area locations: one in Germantown and another in East Memphis, which will host its grand opening celebration on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Customers who attend the East Memphis grand opening will be eligible to receive giveaways. Additionally, the East Memphis location is donating 10% of the Oct. 11 sales to St. Mary’s Episcopal School.

Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken is open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. Its East Memphis location is at 5101 Sanderlin Ave. and its Germantown location is in the Saddle Creek shopping center at 7535 Poplar Ave., Suite 109.
