For the second day this week, the Shelby County Health Department reported 250 or more new coronavirus cases.
According to Health Department data, 13 is the age of the youngest COVID-19 fatality; 100 is the oldest.
That number, 203, is the highest since Sept. 23.
“COVID-19 is still a very much present danger to the people of Shelby County and can be found in virtually all parts of Shelby County,” said Shelby County Health Department Deputy Director David Sweat.
August 9 was the last time Shelby County reported new coronavirus cases in the 300-range; on that day it was 337.
The Shelby County Health Department issued a new health directive Monday, Oct. 12, that addresses evictions as well as the opening and closing of K-12 schools.
Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 33,134 cases, including 31,081 recoveries, 1,516 active cases and 537 deaths.
The daily positivity rate Sunday was less than 3%.
From Sept. 26 to Saturday, Oct. 10, the Shelby County Health Department reported an average of 134 new coronavirus cases and 3,058 test results each day, yielding a 4.4% positivity rate.
Shelby County’s 146 new coronavirus cases came from 2,774 test results, yielding a 5.3% positivity rate. Test results are not reflective of the previous 24-hour period and include tests over multiple days.
More than 500 people in Shelby County have died from the coronavirus, according to the Shelby County Health Department.
Kroger gift cards are intended to cover some expenses until test results are back.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, there were 186 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds, per state data; 57 were in intensive care units.
Two local higher education institutions are the recipients of surplus lab equipment given in a long-term loan from the Health Department.

From Sept. 19 to Saturday, Oct. 3, the Shelby County Health Department reported an average of 122 new coronavirus cases and 2,782 tests reported each day, yielding a 4.4% positivity rate. Those results included tests from people tested multiple times.
Overall, the Shelby County Health Department reports 31,840 coronavirus cases, 478 deaths and 30,050 cases classified as inactive/recovered. The active case count stands at 1,312, a decrease from the 1,452 reported Friday.
On Thursday, the Shelby County Health Department reported seven new coronavirus-related deaths. Friday, it reported six more.
