FedEx Logistics, Medline have distributed 900,000 face masks to hospitals in Central America and Caribbean, and more are on the way.

The dean of clinical affairs at UTHSC says the local pandemic is "under reasonable control" and a week of protests gathering hundreds of Memphians together was important enough to risk what might lead to a rise in confirmed cases.

The new measure gives business owners 24 weeks to spend the federal aid — instead of eight as originally designed — and extends the program through the end of the year while also lengthening the maturity date and deferral period of the loans.

From May 21 to June 3, Shelby County reported an average of 98 new cases a day, 1,553 reported tests and 6.3% positivity rate. In that span, Shelby County reported at least 100 new cases seven times with a daily high of 190 on Tuesday.

Mask distribution has been halted until results of an independent test of the Renfro mask and chemicals used in its manufacturing are confirmed.

Shelby County confirmed 5,412 coronavirus cases, 116 deaths and 3,663 recoveries, according to the health department.

Of the more than 350 children in Shelby County who have tested positive for COVID-19, a tiny handful have developed what appears to be a form of Kawasaki disease, the autoimmune disease that causes blood vessels to inflame. Symptoms include persistent high fever and abdominal pain.

Getting a COVID-19 test is getting easier. Testing sites are rarely full. Some already offer a painless self-test and others are headed that way.

All six Tennessee PBS stations, including WKNO Memphis, will offer high-quality educational programming for grades K-3, weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon through June and July. 

Shelby County added more than 120 new coronavirus cases Monday, June 1. The state has not yet reported its new cases for the day. 

Questions arise about the safety of odor-fighting Silvadur applied to the masks, which diminishes in the fabric with washings.

The county reports a total of 5,003 confirmed coronavirus cases since the first case was reported in early March. The Shelby County Health Department reports 3,442 people have recovered. A total of 23,006 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Tennessee.

The Shelby County Health Department confirmed 115 new cases of COVID-19 in its Saturday morning release, as the number of new tests rose.

The daily positive rate of 8.8% means the daily rate has increased for five consecutive days.

Currently, the YMCA is operating 18 child care programs locally for 700 children, said Jerry Martin, YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South CEO. Once the program begins, that number increases to 41 and up to 3,000 children. 

The death count is dramatically lower than early warnings, but no less tragic, as coronavirus precautions left many victims to die alone, isolated from their spouses and children, dear friends and clergy.

”That means 6% of our population has stepped forward and asked for a test and received one,” Gov. Lee said during his press briefing.

Gov. Bill Lee’s Administration is ending a highly-criticized policy of sharing COVID-positive information with 911 boards and law enforcement agencies across the state, saying plenty of PPE is available and urging first responders to wear it when they interact with people.

Shelby County’s COVID-19 case rate remained stable over the past month as testing numbers rose and the positivity rate continued a steady decline, according to Shelby County Health Department data.

The County Commission approved CARES Act spending, including a hazard pay stipend for some workers and money for the municipal cities.

Shelby County Health Department confirmed 50 new cases Wednesday, May 27, as testing numbers decreased to 821. Eight new deaths from the virus were reported Wednesday.

The experts are "optimistic and hopeful" about the trajectory of COVID-19 in Memphis. So you can be, too. 

Houston High told families it will not hold a traditional graduation in June. Germantown Municipal School District made the announcement Tuesday.

This is the fifth time in the past eight days, Shelby County reported at least 100 new coronavirus cases. The average is about 96 new cases a day as testing numbers over the same eight-day span is 1,407.

Collierville is rescheduling its annual fireworks show to Labor Day weekend. The event is traditionally held as an Independence Day celebration. This year it will mark the town's 150th anniversary. About 20,000 people usually gather at H.W. Cox Park for the event.
